A man becomes excellent enough that an institution tolerates everything it records about him. When his skill ceases to be scarce, the institution returns his life to him as an accurate list.
Act II · The Essay
Movement I
A boy of ten crosses a drainage ditch at the end of a Montreal street and goes down through the alders into a wood along the Rivière-des-Prairies. He has two apples, a pocketknife and four wooden matches folded into their paper. He is gone three nights. His first shelter fails — the branches laid crosswise, water gathering until the whole thing lowers and empties onto his legs — so he crawls out and lays the roof again with the long branches leaned from the root wall to the ground, all running the same way, shorter ones across. He puts the knife into his left shoe so he will find it in the dark.
Above him, constables divide the ground into sections on a parish map and volunteers walk the fence lines twenty feet apart, tying blue cloth wherever a line ends. When a man finishes one line he goes back to the last blue cloth and starts the next. The boy climbs toward one of those markers and finds his own fence wire beneath the leaves. He has been walking in a circle for two days and inside the search for one of them, and the prose remarks on neither.
That is the book’s whole method arriving on its first page: a standard that is physical, indifferent, and does not care who is answering it. Everything after — a stack squared at a market, a floor that drains, a steak cut in honest pairs, a hole measured against a forearm — is the same correction performed on different material. The boy is carried up the bank. He cannot restore himself. The book begins with another body carrying his.
Movement II
At sixteen he hauls crates at a market before dawn. He sets them four to a course with the cleats crossing the slats beneath, labels to the aisle, no split corners on the bottom. He carries a broken crate by hand rather than use the cart, because the cart would press the cracked board upward into the fruit, and he holds it away from his coat so the buttons will not mark the apples. When the count comes up short he finds the missing case under snow behind a wheel and says one word. Neither man looks at him.
By seven that morning the same exactness has produced a theft. He reads two copies of a delivery order, finds the oranges entered twice in the book and once on the loose sheet, corrects the total in front of the driver, and takes the surplus crate. The correction is genuine. So is the removal. By eleven he has put a man’s face into a brass rail with a technique that is economical rather than furious.
This is the story the book could not do without, and it is not about a boy learning discipline. He possesses the discipline before he possesses a legitimate place to exercise it. In his mother’s kitchen at ten past four that morning she cleans a piece of black thread out of his knuckle with a sewing needle and gives him two propositions he does not contest — what the crow sings, the young crow sings, and think before you act. He eats the beans first and says nothing.
Movement III
After eighteen years of continuous service a store terminates him. The meeting is the summit of the book and its method is a single decision: the manager reads the performance section in the same voice he used for the warnings. Sales at a hundred and twelve per cent of plan. The highest fresh-meat increase in the district. No lost-time injury, no sanitation failure, no recall left on display after notice. A service desk keeping a list of customers who ask which days he works before ordering roasts. And before them, the drinking, the smoking, the altered meal periods, the married woman, the nineteen-year-old, the threats.
Every entry is true. Nobody lies and no conspiracy is required. A district manager points to the labour line and reads below plan; the store manager calls it favourable. A union representative writes the wrong number and corrects it with a single stroke. The file has not misunderstood him. It has described both halves of him and assigned them the same administrative weight.
So the chair is not an outburst. It is a jurisdictional refusal by a man who has spent nearly forty years answerable to whether a thing holds, being told he is answerable to something that cannot produce a physical test. He sets his feet outside the casters, takes the hub and the column, straightens his legs, and waits while a woman at the oranges takes two and moves toward produce. Then he throws it. Nobody below is struck. The steel in his coat is never drawn.
Movement IV
The last five stories subtract, one at a time, everything the standard can be applied to. He can still transmit it: he takes a knife back from his son, cuts a clean line beside a torn one, and hands it over. Then it meets a fact it cannot defeat — three legs will not equal four, and a man on a kitchen floor cannot cross to a dog three steps below him. Then it can only handle death, and does: a hole measured against a forearm, short by half a foot, the far wall cut back by a hand’s width, the shovel dragged across the surface afterward so nothing will show where the ground was opened.
Then it becomes correct and worthless. On a demolition site at fifty-six he strips a motel room properly — hinge screws driven flush, leaves cut around before the screws come out, the door laid on baseboard so its face will not touch concrete — and a loader drops a bucket on all of it. By the fourth room he has learned to destroy efficiently, and that adaptation is crushed too.
And then it is only the manner of release. A turnout at altitude, a brass collar tag, a throw that strikes stone and drops short. He picks it up, weighs it in his palm, does not wipe it, walks to where the fall is steeper and throws again. It carries. He sets his hands at ten and two and merges without looking toward the turnout.
Movement V
The formal risk is that consistency will read as monotony. The book defeats it not by varying the sentence but by changing what the procedure encounters: wilderness, theft, competition, a disappearance, apprenticeship, fatherhood, craft, friendship, two affairs, a bureaucracy, an illness, a death, useless labour, relinquishment. The instrument holds at a mean of about ten words a sentence, with barely a simile in forty-two thousand. The jurisdiction changes underneath it.
The governing limitation is scale. One trade, one man, two provinces and a road out of them. The orders held are more numerous than the length predicts — labour, craft, the body, marriage, fatherhood, animals, corporate power, automation, a vanished Québec, a Michif inheritance kept on a disappeared mother’s index cards, a classical one carried in the names and a line of Plutarch — but they route through a single consciousness, and nothing in the book exceeds the man.
What the book finally proposes is that the file and the prose describe the same person and only one of them is a monument. The record says two point three per cent above district standard. The prose says he cut in pairs after that, one heavy, one light, keeping the average exact without shaving the faces. Both are accurate. One is a metric. The book never says which is which, and does not need to.
Act III · The Twelve
Four repeated sentences across forty-two thousand words, under a tenth of one per cent of the text, and each repetition is placed: the tool roll laid out and packed away in the same words, the telephone ringing in the office at both ends of one morning, a name called twice over a store’s speakers. Every story is one continuous action and the subtractive test returns almost nothing. The exception is Caribou Rouge, a single game whose consequence the next story carries in a scorer’s three words; it is the one story the book could lose without losing anything it needs. That, and the discount brevity always earns on this axis, holds the mark at 9.0.
Score: 9 / 10
What the book discloses is a mechanism inside an institution rather than outside it: that a record can be entirely accurate and still possess no adequate language for the person it describes. The file reads the yield sheets and the misconduct in one voice, and both are true. A man draws one line through INEDIBLE and writes UNSOLD above it; the screen offers DAMAGED, OUT OF CODE, IMPROPER STORAGE and no line for UNSOLD, and the true word returns to him as a manual amendment of a waste classification. “We can grieve the penalty. I can’t grieve the facts.” Excellence is a commercial position, held exactly as long as it is scarce, and the book never says so.
Score: 9 / 10
Elevation arrives by compression and never by lift. A boy laying a failed roof again with the branches all running one way; a father matching paint for a room kept shut; a hole widened by the width of a hand so a body need not be folded to fit. The finest instance is a dog counted down a staircase one tread at a time, and the same dog held three steps below a man who cannot cross his own kitchen floor to reach him. The register would be falsified by any raised voice, and it never raises one. The axis is capped by a method that takes its height from contraction.
Score: 8.6 / 10
The naming is classical, load-bearing and never explained: a son called Aeneas, a wife called Niobe, a teacher with AMYNTAS stitched over his pocket. Beneath the names runs the oldest chain in the corpus — Etienne to Rourke to Amyntas to Salvatore, and down to Aeneas and Crawford — carried by a proverb in a mother’s hand: what the crow sings, the young crow sings. David Asham, born below St. Norbert, left in winter, and the mother who kept French on one side of her index cards and Michif on the other did the same. What holds the axis is that the names stand a half-step toward the programmatic, and the book knows it: the men call Amyntas Amen.
Score: 8.7 / 10
The linked working-life collection is an inherited form, and the procedural register that carries it is inherited too. Three graded instruments run across one life — close and warm in the formation, procedural through the mastery, corporately saturated at the hinge — and each is borrowed rather than invented. The departure is one of degree, and of one structural move: in the title story the man who will become the book’s standard is, for a single job on a kill floor shut for the season, the one who says “It’ll move” to a man who says “It won’t,” and who pockets the rag he is handed. That inversion is the swerve. Nothing else in the book turns as hard.
Score: 8.4 / 10
The form is the argument. Eighteen stories, each a single continuous action, arranged chronologically from 1958 to 2005 with one eight-year gap where nothing was breaking. Shelter, stack, skate, floor, block, chair, failing heart, grave and road complete one development and could not be reordered. Most stories open on a date and his age, and speech sits on its own line throughout, so the sequence reads as one instrument applied to different material. What holds it a step below the top is shape: the first story and Caribou Rouge run in long blocks against the short paragraphs of the other sixteen, and only the first has the reason of a boy with no one to speak to.
Score: 9 / 10
The yield is in the pairings, none of them explained. A missing crate found honestly at sixteen and a crate stolen off a corrected order an hour later. The glass that holds when he drives a winger into it, and the pane a chair opens years afterward. “Nothing’s running” on a shut kill floor and “nothing ran” in a dark garage after a son has cut one clean line. A rag handed over on another man’s floor, pocketed, never given back, and used to wipe a shovel at a grave. A match paper folded closed at ten and a pen capped at forty-seven over an acknowledgment he will not sign. The depth is forecast, not yet demonstrated.
Score: 8.9 / 10
The contest is with the code hero, and the book wins it on his ground, using his materials — a trade, a physical discipline, a man who does not explain himself. The refutation is exact: craft is shown to be a commercial position rather than a moral one, a discipline a corporation rents and then returns, and a man is tolerated precisely as long as he is scarce. The stories are shaped like the linked collections that founded the tradition, and they answer rather than imitate them. The force is real and local: it wins one argument inside the tradition rather than reorganising the field around it. Achieved reach is not scored. The mark is intrinsic force alone.
Score: 8.4 / 10
Nothing here depends on a technology, a politics or a moment. A man losing an argument with his own standards, a father taking a knife back from his son and cutting a second line beside the first, a dog buried correctly by a man who cannot say why the correctness matters — none of it dates. The period markers that do appear, a Lévesque victory on a kitchen radio, a time clock, a C.A.O. screen with no line for UNSOLD, are handled as furniture rather than subject. The interior signs of durability are as strong as any on this bench. The mark sits at the ceiling for a work that has not yet had a decade to survive.
Score: 8.2 / 10
The instrument holds one grain from the market to the turnout. Sixteen of the eighteen stories average thirteen to thirty-four words a paragraph; speech sits on its own line throughout; every man keeps his name, so the receiver is Ben in every story he enters. The similes can be counted on one hand, and said and asked carry nearly all the speech. The negations that remain are the gym’s rules and the burial’s refusals, and they are placed. What holds the mark below the highest band is Caribou Rouge, which still runs at nearly eight negations to the thousand words, and a register so stripped that it removes many of the occasions on which technical difficulty can be shown.
Score: 9 / 10
One law governs the whole and every element obeys it: what the body can test, what holds after the worker leaves, and what no category without a physical test can adjudicate. A market, a rink, a kill floor, a block, a gym, a graveside, a kitchen floor and a demolition container are the same discipline applied to different material. The chronology survives every check: born 1948, ten in the Saraguay wood, twenty-nine at the block in March 1977, forty-seven on 28 October 1995, fifty-six on a motel gutted for renovation, and every dateline, age and season agrees with every other. What holds it below the summit is that a world this consistent has purchased the consistency with narrowness.
Score: 9 / 10
More orders than the length predicts: labour, craft, the body, aging, marriage, fatherhood, animals and their deaths, corporate power, automation, hockey, a vanished Québec, a Métis inheritance, a classical one. They are integrated rather than listed — an election result arrives on the radio while a father and son glaze a sash, and automation arrives as a reason-for-shrink screen in a working morning. But every order routes through one consciousness, and the book never holds a second life at the weight of the first. Niobe, Zoe, Aeneas and Ben are seen exactly as far as he sees them. One man, one trade, forty-seven years: nothing in the book exceeds the man.

Act IV · The Reckoning
8.7 / 10 — Final Average
Canonical Placement: Tier IV — Canonical
Strongest Dimensions
The Inevitable, The Unconcealment, The Living Form, The Made and The Inner Law at 9.0, with The Bottomless Well at 8.9. Eighteen continuous actions under one law, joined without a visible seam.
Limiting Dimension
The Imperishable at 8.2, The Encompassed at 8.3, and The Swerve and Pressure on Tradition at 8.4. A work that has had no decade in which to survive, whose every order routes through one man, and whose departure from the form it inherits is one of degree.
The Universal Minimum is met — no axis falls below 8.2, the highest floor in this corpus. The Necessity Cap clears at 9.0 on measured redundancy of under a tenth of one per cent. The Coherence Floor clears with room, The Living Form, The Made and The Inner Law each at 9.0. The Epochal Gate is unmet: The Unconcealment at 9.0 and The Archetypal Deep at 8.7 clear the bar, while The Swerve at 8.4, Pressure on Tradition at 8.4 and The Imperishable at 8.2 fall short.
