One instrument, read against every medium. What the desk measures, how it places a work, and what it refuses to do.
A work is placed by its aggregate score across twelve axes, each scored from 0 to 10 and weighted equally. The average locates it on the tier scale. That much is arithmetic, and arithmetic is not sufficient.
Canon-forming standing is not reachable by aggregate alone. The summit additionally requires a work to clear a cap, three floors, five deep-axis gates and a universal minimum — each met independently. No axis compensates for another at the summit.
The reasoning is simple. An average of twelve numbers cannot see a hole. A work scoring 9.4 on eleven axes and 5.0 on the twelfth averages 9.03, and would otherwise be canon-forming with no mythic depth at all. Weighting does not fix this: even at fourteen per cent of the total, a catastrophic axis averages away. Only a threshold can veto. The thresholds exist so that the summit’s claim — depth on every deep axis at once — is enforced rather than asserted.
Does the work feel necessary rather than assembled? The test is subtractive: what could be removed without loss? A work of high necessity resists the question — its parts are required by what it has to say, and its scale, however large, is compelled by the argument rather than permitted by it.
Caps the summit at 7.5. A work no part of which is required cannot be canon-forming, whatever else it achieves.
What does the work bring into the open that was not visible before? The highest marks go to disclosure of an articulated human or social condition — something that can be stated as true and holds. Disclosure of a mood ranks below disclosure of a meaning, however powerfully the mood is rendered.
Gated at 8.5 for the summit. A canon-forming work uncovers something; atmosphere alone does not qualify.
Does the work reach elevation — beauty, terror, transport, grandeur — and how often? Both height and frequency count. A single summit moment in an otherwise flat work scores below a work that rises repeatedly. Elevation may be cold or warm, uplifting or dreadful; the axis is indifferent to which.
Ungated. A work may be great without being elevated, and several on the bench are.
Does the particular acquire archetypal significance while remaining particular? The governing distinction is between myth evoked and myth built. A work that summons deep patterns as atmosphere or allusion scores well. A work in which the archetypal structure is load-bearing scores at the top.
Gated at 8.5. This is the axis most often inflated by allusion, and the gate exists to require construction instead.
How far does the work depart from the tradition it inherits, and what did the departure cost? These are one judgment. A deviation that risked nothing was a stylistic accent; a wager placed on a proven path is not a swerve. The axis scores the turn and the stake together.
Gated at 8.5. Formerly split between this axis and a separate risk axis, which triplicated a single fact; the two were merged.
Would substantially changing the form change what the work knows? Substitute a different form for this content: what does the work stop being able to say? A high score means the answer is everything — form is the instrument of the knowledge rather than its container.
Floored at 7.0. A work whose form is arbitrary cannot reach the summit however profound its content.
Does the work keep yielding on return? Evidence is preferred to promise. A work that has sustained decades of re-examination without exhausting has demonstrated this; a work that appears deep on first encounter has only suggested it. Semantic depth and formal depth both count.
Ungated, and evidentiary — a new work can only be forecast on this axis, never demonstrated.
Did the work move the field it entered? Two components scored together: intrinsic force, whether the work constitutes a real reorganisation of possibility, and achieved reach, whether it in fact redirected what came after. Delayed influence is credited and discounted.
Gated at 8.5. The hardest axis for contemporary work, and the principal reason the summit is not available to it.
Will the work last, and what evidence is there already? Demonstrated survival outranks predicted survival. The axis penalises a surface fixed to its moment — a production era, a topical satire, a technology — and rewards what has already outlived the conditions that produced it.
Gated at 8.5. Like Agon it requires elapsed time, which no living work possesses.
Command of the medium: prose, structure, editing, arrangement, camera, harmony, line. Craft is not what makes a work great, which is why this axis does not gate the summit. Its absence disqualifies, which is why it floors. At the highest marks the making is load-bearing.
Floored at 7.0. Necessary and not sufficient — the rubric’s clearest statement that skill is not achievement.
Does one physics govern the whole? Take the two most distant elements in the work — tonally, formally, narratively, conceptually. Do they obey the same law? A high score means yes, and the wider the range covered, the stronger the achievement. Narrowness is not coherence.
Floored at 7.0. A work that contradicts itself structurally cannot be canon-forming.
How many orders of reality does the work successfully hold in one structure? Achieved, not attempted. Integrated, not merely present. Consciousness, the family, labour, the state, history, the sacred, the natural order — held together, not listed.
Ungated with its own floor at 6.0, because short forms cannot reach the upper bands. A low mark on a small form describes the form.
Below the summit, placement is by aggregate alone.
| V | 9.0 – 10.0 | Epochal |
| IV | 8.0 – 8.9 | Canonical |
| III | 7.0 – 7.9 | Major |
| II | 6.0 – 6.9 | Accomplished |
| I | 5.0 – 5.9 | Minor |
A work averaging below 5.0 is untiered. The desk records the score and withholds the designation, because the five tiers describe kinds of achievement, and below that threshold the instrument is no longer distinguishing between kinds. A work at 4.8 and a work at 2.2 differ in degree only. The silence is the finding.
Tier V requires the aggregate and every one of the following, each met independently.
| The Necessity Cap | Ananke | ≥ 7.5 |
| The Coherence Floor | Entelecheia · Techne · Cosmos | ≥ 7.0 each |
| The Epochal Gate | Aletheia · Mythos · Parekklisis · Agon · Aphtharsia | ≥ 8.5 each |
| The Universal Minimum | all twelve except Megethos | ≥ 7.5 |
| The Megethos Floor | Megethos | ≥ 6.0 |
Two of the five gates — Pressure on Tradition and The Imperishable — measure what a work has already done to the field and already survived. Neither is available to a work that has not yet had time to do or survive anything.
This is not a judgment about contemporary art. It is an admission about the instrument: the desk cannot measure elapsed time that has not elapsed. A living work may reach Tier IV on every axis available to it and be recorded there honestly. The summit is a claim about consequence, and consequence is retrospective.
The cold read. The provisional score set is established on direct encounter with the work, before consulting criticism, reputation or consensus.
Movement after the cold read. Close analysis may move only those axes directly affected by new evidence found in the work itself. Reputation, consensus and desired tier may move no axis.
The cross-media check. A score established against the works of its own medium drifts relative to the rest of the bench. Before a score locks, the work’s two nearest neighbours in a different medium are identified and the axis-by-axis ordering is confirmed to survive. The diagnostic: if a work wins the majority of axes against a comparator and still lands below it on aggregate, the score set is wrong somewhere.
The unit declaration. What is being scored is named before scoring begins — the volume or the sequence, the album or the track, the film or the trilogy. A work may be scored at more than one unit, and the units are reported separately.
It will not launder consensus. A score is not adjusted because it disagrees with received opinion. Where the desk departs from consensus it says so and gives the axis.
It will not tier a corpus. The desk scores works. Everything else it reports — bodies of work, careers, movements — is a distribution, never a tier.
It will not adjust an axis for a form’s limits. Where a form makes an axis structurally unreachable, the rubric records the ceiling and the score stands. A fifty-minute album cannot encompass what a tetralogy encompasses, and the figure says so rather than compensating for it.
A substantially revised work is a new object and is scored as one. The prior score is not amended; both are recorded, and the difference between them is itself a finding.
A score may be challenged on its stated terms. A challenge must name the axis, the evidence in the work, and the band the evidence supports. Challenges that cite reputation, sales, awards or consensus are not answerable by this instrument and are declined.
