Axis 10 of twelve · TEC
Command of the medium: prose, structure, editing, arrangement, camera, harmony, line. Craft is not what makes a work great, which is why this axis does not gate the summit. Its absence disqualifies, which is why it floors. At the highest marks the making is load-bearing.
Floored at 7.0. Necessary and not sufficient — the rubric’s clearest statement that skill is not achievement.

The instrument holds one grain from the market to the turnout. Sixteen of the eighteen stories average thirteen to thirty-four words a paragraph; speech sits on its own line throughout; every man keeps his name, so the receiver is Ben in every story he enters. The similes can be counted on one hand, and said and asked carry nearly all the speech. The negations that remain are the gym’s rules and the burial’s refusals, and they are placed. What holds the mark below the highest band is Caribou Rouge, which still runs at nearly eight negations to the thousand words, and a register so stripped that it removes many of the occasions on which technical difficulty can be shown.

Severe and nearly faultless. Not one raised dialogue attribution in forty-two thousand words — no shouting, no snapping, no growling — and a single adverb tag, “Stay there,” said quietly in a motel room to a woman lying awake with her face to the wall. The dialogue is the best in the corpus: the brothers at the station, a kitchen with a third mug on the shelf, an officer who decided before he came up. The geography is exact to the kilometre and the hour. The cost is a mannerism of negation, “did not” close to four hundred times, and the axis stops short of the top because a prose this stripped forgoes many occasions to show difficulty.

One forensic instrument sustained across nearly sixty-seven thousand words: long periodic clauses that close on a small object, dialogue withheld to the point of austerity, comedy and horror in the same grammar. The control is measurable. No slips of the hand, no stock construction leaned on, and the chat and notebook pages of the last movement are in the book’s own syntax, lower case and unquoted, so nothing in them reads as pastiche. Mrs. Alvarez’s granddaughter is a granddaughter in spring and in the blackout. What holds it below the ceiling is the sameness the discipline produces: the instrument rarely varies, and the sex scenes share one clinical voice across every couple.

Nine distinct registers sustained convincingly, which is the corpus’s most difficult technical feat: the monstrous first person, the fable’s plainness, the affair’s close realism, the car-theft voice, the childhood’s warmth, and the stripped administrative present of the final long part. The broccoli scene and the garden tour are command of the highest order. In the last part the administered narration holds while the men inside it sound like themselves — “Whatever it thinks I got, I don’t got it whole.” The manuscript measures clean: no spacing faults, no empty paragraphs, and the one recurring sentence recurs by design. Held below the highest band by the opening part, where the grotesque runs more energetically than it is governed.

8.4 · Tier IV
Two instruments held cleanly, with hedging kept as a marker of the systemic register rather than a tic that leaks across the seam. Endings stop on objects or a single line of speech. The deathbed story lets a glove come off with a soft snap and has no softening adverb anywhere around it; the prices of the second half arrive in sentences of their own, and the joins between paragraphs are clean throughout. What holds the axis below the higher band is that the first half’s flatness, though deliberate, offers the prose few opportunities to demonstrate difficulty, and one or two stories in each half read as the same instrument played again rather than played further.

Four sustained registers across two hundred and sixty-two thousand words. The night-register’s field headers, the cetology’s taxonomic prose and the blazon’s anatomical catalogue are three distinct technical instruments, each held under control. The dialogue of the last volume is the best in the work: the hospital room, the handball game called round by round, the kitchen at the close carried on “Brother.” and “Today.” Held below the highest band by the fourth volume, where the assimilated register — the achievement of the book — is also sustained past the point of diminishing yield.

8.2 · Tier IV
A rock band executing electronic, orchestral and free-jazz procedures without amateurism anywhere in fifty minutes, and without the seams showing. The brass arrangement, the modular programming and the vocal editing are each performed to professional standard in idioms the band had not previously worked in. Held below the top band because the technical achievement is one of successful acquisition rather than invention — every procedure here existed and was executed well rather than extended. Where the band could not play an idiom itself it hired players who could and directed them: the brass on the third track and the strings on the fourth are session and orchestral musicians working to the band’s arrangements.

The making is a reference standard and has been treated as one by two subsequent generations of producers. The guitar architecture, the drum editing, the vocal processing and the sequencing are each exemplary, and the album achieves technical ambition without audible strain anywhere in fifty-three minutes. Held below the top band because the technical achievement operates entirely within an established vocabulary; the difficulty overcome is of execution rather than of invention. The opening track’s drums, played by hand and then cut apart and reassembled in the computer, are the clearest single instance. Much of the album was recorded away from a conventional studio, in a country house near Bath.
