The Living Form (Entelecheia)

Would substantially changing the form change what the work knows? Substitute a different form for this content: what does the work stop being able to say? A high score means the answer is everything — form is the instrument of the knowledge rather than its container.

Floored at 7.0. A work whose form is arbitrary cannot reach the summit however profound its content.

The Burdens of Ordinary Kindness

Dionysus Flambouras · Literature

8.4 · Tier IV

The collection’s claim to permanence. A book arguing that systems produce no bodies and people are made of nothing else could not be a single sequence; it has to be two halves that answer one to one, and it is. The pairing is exact — confinement to confinement, a deciding machine to a deciding machine, a man held in a dark store with a cake box to a man held by snow with a wrapped box on the seat, testimony overwritten to testimony entered unasked. The halves run within a few hundred words of each other, each under its own epigraph. Nothing announces the scheme; the shape of the book performs the argument the stories decline to state.

8.7 · Tier IV

The form is the argument. Eighteen stories, each a single continuous action, arranged chronologically from 1958 to 2005 with one eight-year gap where nothing was breaking. Shelter, stack, skate, floor, block, chair, failing heart, grave and road complete one development and could not be reordered. Most stories open on a date and his age, and speech sits on its own line throughout, so the sequence reads as one instrument applied to different material. What holds it a step below the top is shape: the first story and Caribou Rouge run in long blocks against the short paragraphs of the other sixteen, and only the first has the reason of a boy with no one to speak to.

The Pale Criminal

Dionysus Flambouras · Literature

8.9 · Tier IV

The form is the argument. A work about a register that converts persons into standing is written by a narration that is itself converted, volume by volume. The night-register is the only container in which a soul can appear as a field and the field can be honest about what it cannot hold. The kingdom’s own instruments do its work: three structures are ended by a sentence and entered by a decree, and the woman corrected out of a sidewalk in spring goes onto a hand-ruled form of three lines — under Name nothing, under Address the square. Held below the highest band because in the fourth volume the same apparatus often restates what a scene has already enacted.

8.6 · Tier IV

The polyphony is the argument. Nine registers enact the flattening they describe, and the long-short pairing means each broken figure is heard again after the machine has finished. The garden tour is the same principle at the scale of a scene: the horror is inseparable from the guided-walk form that delivers it. The design holds to the last part, where the narration belongs to the state and Terry and Randolph speak as the men of American Rose and Still Two-Thirty-One. Every part stops where it arrives — a terrorist invented among corpses, a boy who will not go into King’s Park, a furnace keeping its own ledger. Marked below the summit by the childhood part, beautifully made and formally conventional.

The Gentle Collapsing

Dionysus Flambouras · Literature

8.6 · Tier IV

The form is the argument. A book about an aggregate could not be written with a protagonist without contradicting itself, so the attention roves and never adjudicates, and the crescent is the thing being tracked. The calendar supplies the structure a plotless year requires; the apparatus is quoted rather than described, so the reader holds the record and the thing recorded at once. The form closes on itself: the Coverage Map’s first entry after the outage repeats its last before it, the STATIC OBJECT (probable) first met at Halloween. Emma’s notebook is the book’s double, a column for what happened and one for what recurred. Marked below the summit where the narration tells what the structure shows.

8.3 · Tier IV

The form is close to exactly what the argument requires. A record about a society that organises movement and forbids arrival is built as twelve arrivals at one position, turning on a machine reading a specification at the head of its second half. The human voice at the close, unprocessed, asks only that the listener slow down, which is the one instruction the apparatus never gives. Held just below the highest band because the shape is a mood’s shape rather than a development, and two tracks occupy positions the record has already established.

8.4

His Long Home

Dionysus Flambouras · Literature

8.2 · Tier IV

The form is the record given back in stages: two people in a car, and what one of them knows released in the order she can bear. The dialogue in fragments is the sound of two people who have decided what not to say, and the ninth section ends with the driver at his kitchen table in the dark, knowing nothing of the house in the bush he has left. Change the form and the book loses what it knows, which is how long a truth can travel before it is said. The coda breaks the frame in a different car and is the right break. Only the road form, inherited whole, holds the axis below the higher band.

8.2 · Tier IV

The form enacts the argument with real precision: an album about the impossibility of appearing, which chops, vocodes, distorts and finally removes its most identifiable element across its first five tracks, then readmits it by degrees until the closing song is sung almost bare over pump organ and harp, before silence and a wordless coda. The schedule of withdrawal is exact and the ending could not be earned by any other structure. Held below the top band by the middle third, where the form’s commitment to suspension produces passages that maintain the condition rather than develop it.
